Getting to the CLI from GRUB using Ubuntu 10.10

How can one get to the command line to run updates before getting into the gui from GRUB? In other words when the GRUB menu displays how can I get to the CLI from there?

When you see GRUB linux is not yet loaded .
But what you can do change you're run level so you 're system is always booting into the cli .
And when you like to have the Gui start the GUI

at grub, hit the 'e' key for edit, and then add either 1-5 to the linux line "kernel"

this will tell grub to start the kernel in what ever run level you want 1-5 1=single user, I recommend 3 multiuser

when hitting the 'e' key you should see an entry sorta like this

linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-bpo.5-686 """"this will vary""""

put a 3 at the end of 686

linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-bpo.5-686 3

then boot the kernel
