at grub, hit the 'e' key for edit, and then add either 1-5 to the linux line "kernel"
this will tell grub to start the kernel in what ever run level you want 1-5 1=single user, I recommend 3 multiuser
when hitting the 'e' key you should see an entry sorta like this
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-bpo.5-686 """"this will vary""""
put a 3 at the end of 686
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-bpo.5-686 3
then boot the kernel
