I did a clean install with ubuntu 7.10. I didn't enable the restricted drivers for nvidia. I installed the envy for gutsy. 64 bit by the way. After rebooting, i get the X on screen to set video configuration. I have to go into low resolution mode. Change nvidia in xorg.conf to get back to high resolution, but i have no 3d. I've tried many solutions posted here. Can someone please give me a path to seek to solve this problem. I also re-enabled the restricted drivers after installing envy and that didn't work either. I always end up back to the X screen low resolution mode. I didn't have this problem with feisty.
No such problem with FX5200, 32 bit and restricted drivers. People have mixed results with Envy and other unsupported package managers. It could be that Envy has left some remnants in xorg or other configuration files that aren't compatible with the supported packages. I've heard of users that tried Envy but then couldn't get things working with the supported drivers without a clean install.
Well I am having a somewhat similar issue , can I ask if you go to use nvidia-settings do you get this error even though you know the drivers are installed enabled and in use.
Code:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
Perhaps your not actualy using the "nvidia" drive but the "nv". "nv" is much less capable. Examine /etc/X11/xorg.conf to see what driver is called for. Just for an example here's the section of xorg on my machine that includes the display driver being used.
