I downloaded real player using both the aptitude install and automatix methods, and the problem occured with both. The player works fine and all by itself, but it won't work for embedded media in firefox.

For example, trying it out at a Mozilla embedded media test site brings an error window up which looks like this after I click on details.

Another example is that at this site it acts like I don't have the player and wants me to install it.

Why isn't firefox able to play real player embedded media? Is this a $PATH problem? If so, how can I fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the Firefox Addon "MediaPlayerConnectivity" installed? When MediaPlayerConnectivity is configured to have Real Player play rpm files, you should not have a problem. Also, Helix Player needs to be uninstalled as it interferes with the Real Player plugin.
