Firefox closing and ubuntu logging off unexpectedly

I have just recently been having problems with ubuntu. I just installed easy ubuntu which did show some errors when i tried installing codecs for rhythmbox but did install/enable drivers for ATI. It did say to put wget..... for medibuntu into the terminal but then it comes back and says no open PGP data found. Also, firefox closed on me. Just closed for no obvious reason. It has also logged me off too. When I switch users just so no one can get on my comp if they come in my room when im gone, it'll log me out of gaim and it hasn't done that till today. So yeah, as you can tell I'm a newb...have had linux for almost a week now.

Try looking in /var/log/messages
Code:
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/messages | less
See if that comes back with anything interesting.

Can't help you with ATI stuff, but if Firefox is closing on you then the Error console inside the application may help.

Do this:

Tools->Error Console

I had a problem a couple of days ago and saw a java exception in here. I simply replaced the offending file with the one from Mozilla and Firefox no longer crashes or complains.

It's not closing on me anymore. Now when I try to look at screensavers it logs me off when I slelect a second screen saver. I've never had this happen before when I first started using Linux. It also restarts ubuntu after a certain amount of time that the computer is idle. Even if I click on lock screen, after being idle for a while it'll log me off. Then I'll log back in and its like i never logged in. I tried the previous suggestion of putting in the sudo tail and it shows ubuntu shutting down cleanly and then restarting.

Problem Fixed

I found out why everytime I looked at more than one screen saver. The reason was because my ATI video card wasn't properly installed. I downloaded Envy and that got it to work. So hopefully this helps anyone else that has the problem of Ubuntu restarting or logging you out.
