Finding latest kernel

Hi--

I want to try my hand at compiling a kernel.

Got a new machine, put Hoary 5.04 on it.

Now I want to compile either another kernel identical to this or to the latest stable kernel being used.

I have tried this:

1. apt-get source 2.6.10-34.4-386--it finds nothing

2. search of Ubuntu site--nothing found.

3. Google for Linux--no help either.

4. Synaptic package manager--appears to only have 2.4.27, which is older than what I have.

5. Ubuntu Update Manger--seemed to download exacty the same one I have--2.6.10--5-386.

So where do I get this latest kernel for doing this compiling?

Thanks!

http://kernel.org

Click the "F" link to get full source code, otherwise you wll just get a patch to the latest version.

linux-image-2.6.10-5-k7-smp - Linux kernel image for version 2.6.10 on AMD K7 SMP.

These are in my repositories. 2.6.11 are the latest available. If you wait for Breezy (released next month) you'll probably get an 2.6.12 to play with.

Exclamation

qwijibow and angkor--

Thanks for the quick replies! You are super!

I went to the kernel.org site and it has kernels not made specifically for the Ubuntu system. What is the difference? My guess is that I want one made specifically for Ubuntu so it has all the functionality of the original kernel I am working off of. Then again, I do not know what I am speaking about here....

Now, as to what apt-cache finds--is there someplace I can go to find out what those abbreviations mean (like PPro and SMP)? It has always been confusing trying to figure out what to download when there are so many choices....

Also, I saw a security release statement on the Ubuntu site that refers to kernel 2.6.10-34.4-386, but nowhere do I see that listed. Is that some sort of a update to 2.6.10-5? (If you know?)

Thanks!

The Ubuntu kernels are pre-compiled kernels made by Ubuntu.

It doesnt really matter that Ubuntu compiled it.
You could repace your Ubuntu kernel with a Slackware or Redhat kernel. it would not matter.

The kernel from kernel.org is the official linux kernel source code (also refered to as vanilla).
Pure, origonal, un-altered linux.

If you want to compile your own linux kernel, i would surgest you start with a kernel.org kernel.
