Edgy Upgrade

Hello everyone,

Situation:

I was running on Ubuntu Dapper Drake perfectly fine

Thought Process:

I want to upgrade to Edgy

Solution:

- I opened my sources.list file in gedit
- hit ctrl-H to replace all appearances of the word "Dapper" with the word "Edgy"
- Saved the changes
- Opened the terminal
- typed sudo apt-get upgrade
- then typed sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then without thinking and assuming that the upgrade was finalized I thought well now I must reboot to see effects.

Upon reboot the x server for my graphical interface did not load so I logged in on the non-graphical terminal and:

- typed sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- it said something about "-f install"
- so I typed sudo apt-get -f install
- then typed sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- so it went through the process again upgraded some more things that were not upgraded the first time

So I thought Ok I just need to keep doing this until all things are upgrading

Well it says there are 41 things left to upgraded including the X-server stuff and python stuff but for some reason using the apt-get command will not upgrade those things and now when left with using linux I'm left with a blue screen with gray dialogue box that says my x server is not loaded correctly and I can't access linux graphical interface

Can someone help me fix this problem?????

I had this once and I successfully fixed it. As far as I can remember I upgrade the python packages and X server individually by issuing:

Code:
apt-get -f upgrade python*
apt-get -f upgrade xserver-xorg
apt-get -f dist-upgrade
See if that helps.

thanks for the advice that did not work, however I typed in

apt-get install xserver-xorg
start x -to verify that xserver works
gdm -to verify gnome is started
ctrl-alt-backspace -to reboot

opened synaptic package manager, opened repositories, verified and optimized

Everything works great. Thank you.

At least it helped you get on the right track ;-)

The path I took may of been the same or slightly different. I don't remember 100%.
