Cannot start Samba-why?

After modyfying the smb.conf file I'm trying to start Samba. I gave the command

(The smb file to control-start,stop,etc- is located in the dirs

/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/schemas/system/smb
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/system/smb
/usr/lib/cups/backend/smb

which one is the right command?)

/........./smb start

but the terminal promts that the command does not exists
(in all dirs). What do I have to do to make Samba work??

The problem must be definitely on the Linux side because whenever I plug out the ethernet cable, the other PC(it's a 2 PC network I want to set up-crossover) with WinXP prompts that the cable is plug out-so it sees that another PC exists

are you sure samba isn't already started on ubuntu?

try doing this to find out:

"ps -ef|grep -i smb"

if there's something running then it comes up....

try this to start it if not:

/etc/init.d/smb start

No, even there (/etc/init.d) there isn't the smb script so I can't start (or stop if it exists) Samba anyway.

Is there a patch I am supposed to get in order to activate Samba?
