Cannot Resize ext3 from Ubuntu Live CD partitionig tool

Hello to all.
I have installed Ubuntu 7.0 together with Windows VIsta in my Toshiba laptop. Both work fine.
However, from my mistake, in the partitioning step of Ubuntu, i left very few GBs of my HD for the Vista OS.

I tried to resize the ext3 partition through the Ubuntu live CD partitioning tool, but although i unmount the partition before resizing it, when i press the apply button, an error message is presented indicating that the partition is mounted.
I haven't yet tried to resize it with other partition tools found on Web such as PartMagic or GParted.
Are they safe? Cause its trouble reinstalling Vista and Linux from the start.

Thanks for your time.
Any help appreciated.

I am guessing "Ubuntu 7.04" as there is no month zero this year (AFAIK).

The alternate partition tools should be fine ... use partition magic on the Vista partition. Note, the minimum for any vista is 15GiB with 20GiB recc'd for Home Basic and 40GiB for the others. Many users find it useful to create a 4GiB FAT32 partition as well, which Vista knows about (it gets a windows drive letter.) Linux partitions should not receive a drive letter in windows.

But first, read:

I wouldn't bet on being able to resize the linux partition non destructively since you will be chopping off it's head. Be prepared to reinstall there. Vista should be OK... it's gaining at the tail.

Well, to be sure that i will not have any problems after resizing ext3, i deleted the Ubuntu partition through Vista, and reinstalled it. Hopefully after reinstalling Ubuntu all worked fine.
Plus i managed to specify a new partition size at the partitioning step.

Thanks for your help and time.
