Recently loaded Ubuntu 8.10 for PPC/PS3 on my PS3 but it always boots into command line mode. Starts in runlevel 2. Looked in /etc/rc2.d and /etc.rc5.d and tried to enable gdm using sysv.rc-conf but no gdm available. Tried startx, command not found; tried to enable x11 in sysv.rc.conf but no change upon reboot. Is there a way to start Gnome or KDE from command line interface? Or a way to change /etc/init.d to load a GUI? There is no inittab file. Thanks for any help.
If startx is not available then you may not have installed X and Gnome. This is very likely if you installed the server version of Ubuntu. See if you can use apt-get to install the ubuntu-desktop package.
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
