I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and Amarok 1.4 for my audio player. I moved all my AAC (.m4a) files over and most play fine. I do have all the FAAC/FAAD support installed and the other codec support as well.
For my former m4p files (protected AAC) I made CDs from the iTunes on my former system, then I imported them via Sound Juicer in Ogg format.
Both the Oggs and some of the m4a files have very low volumes (encoded in them). On the Mac, I would adjust these by editing meta data (get info) but there is no such function in anything I have found on the Linux system.
I have tried EasyTag and Normalize-audio (CLI) but can not seem to change those gain settings in the files. On the oggs, I have found the ogg tools package, but have not tried to set the gains...
if possible, I would like to process all my files and "normalize" them all to my loudest file.
Is there a GUI tool to do this? (Note I could do them one at a time in Audacity, but there are 1451 files -- don't really have that kind of time ;-))
I've never had this problem, so I don't exactly know the solution, but you may look into Sox. As far as I know, there's no GUI for it, but it could allow you to make/run a simple BASH script to set the volume in your songs all at once, once you have figured out the best volume level to make them.
Read the sox manpage and formulate a command to fix one of your files, and if you need help with writing a simple script to apply it to all your files, let me know.
Be sure to back up your music before you begin messing with it!
