If you look into the script you can see the selection of the two alternative files (with AMD64 and I386) you can edit the script to download and install the I386 file. That should work for your system but fglrx will not be perfectly compiled for your I686 processor. You should nevertheless have a working 3D accelerated X.

I can edit the script for you later today. But I'll not be possible untill I get home from work (~10 hours from now).

Edit.
Find this line in the script
I386_FLAG="$(echo "$KERN_VER" | grep -i i386 | wc -l)"

Replace with
I386_FLAG="$(echo "$KERN_VER" | grep -i i686 | wc -l)"

A quick and dirty fix making sure you install the i386 binary on your i686 system.
