LXer: LibreOffice Is The New OpenOffice.org

Published at LXer:

Thanks to Oracle, not only is OpenSolaris now dead along with other open-source projects previously funded by Sun Microsystems now facing hardship, but the OpenOffice.org community has now decided to part ways too. The OpenOffice.org community has decided to launch The Document Foundation as a new, independent organization. The Document Foundation will now be backing "LibreOffice" as the brand rather than OpenOffice.org.

Oracle didn't officially kill OO (yet?), although some attribute Oracle remaining mum on the issue is seen as a death sentence. The devs of OO have already made a preemptive move to preserve OO by forking it as LibreOffice, it is OO reborn with a different name.

Yeah... And so if OO dies, LibreOffice will remain.

That said, what about Chromium + Google Docs? Google Docs has a feature set that now rivals OO and even M$ Office 2003, so that would be okay too. And you could also access the documents across multiple operating systems, meaning that Linux users could easily send documents to WinBloze users and they still would be able to open them.

Google will also gladly give your docs to any government that asks for them.

$ apt-cache policy libreoffice3-writer
libreoffice3-writer:
Installed: 3.3.0-7
Candidate: 3.3.0-7
Version table:
*** 3.3.0-7 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Looks good to me.

Yes, but definitely not if the government in question is out there to suppress political dissent, like China for instance. Just read the UpFront article entitled "Google vs. <the Chinese flag>" if you want to find out this information.
