Can't print: links in /etc/init.d/rc5.d to ../cups gone. Yast & chkconfig: no

I couldn't print anymore.

Reason: Links in /etc/init.d/rc5.d (and rc3.d / rc2.d) to ../cups are gone. How? Why? Anybody ever having similar problems?

Yast & chkconfig don't create new ones as I would have expected. The rcx.d directories are owned by root:root with 755 permissions. "Modprobe" says that the cups module is loaded. What can have happened at all?

In desperation I created the links as root by hand. Everything seems back to normal. But...

I'm not sure of the reason, but I would advise always keeping a sync'd backup of your /etc folder using Unison, rsync or the like. When there are package upgrades this directory can have many changes that are not readily visible to the user.

Next boot the /etc/init.d/cups file was zero bytes large. Uaargh . I had a copy from an earlier install and copied that over, printing back to normal...

What can be the cause for all this?

Thanks, Xian, I use rsnapshot for that, but have not yet set it up after the last install .
