Question What kind of lizard is the SUSE mascot????

Howdy,

I know this may seem like a wierd question but I was wondering what type of lizard the SUSE "mascot" is. I'm talking about the lizard which appears as the default desktop background in SUSE 10. It's green in color, has spikes down it's spine and the back of it's head is pointed looking. It seems to be standing on a tree branch.
Thanks much.

Through some searching I found:

http://www.suse.com//us/private/prod...eko/index.html

So I guess it's a chameleon, I have yet to see the Suse 10 desktop so I am unaware of the picture you are talking about, but that is their mascot.

You could be right but I thought of another possibility -- gecko. They are very common in Mexico and you'll find one in almost every room. They eat bugs and are considered good luck.

You silly guys... . it's an adult male Veiled Chameleon.

Apprently, I'm the local exotic pets expert on LQ... lol.. I have been raising/breeding snakes, tarantulas, monitors(Nile Monitors, Savannah monitors, Argus Monitors), and other lizards such as Leopard geckos, American Alligators, and of course, chameleons...

The suse logo is also a chameleon, although it's species is not well defined, it could be, and my suspicion is that it is, a juvenile Veiled Chameleon. I say juvenile because it lacks the large veil on top of it's head. It could also be a female Jackson's Chameleon.

Here are some photos to help you guys out:
Veiled Chameleon
Nile Monitor - baby
NileMonitor - Adult
Leopard Gecko
American Alligator - juvenile
Indian Ornamental Tarantula

Halo14: Had difficult is it to care for such a reptile as a pet? Perhaps we should take this offline and discuss it elsewhere? The reason I'm asking is because I'd be very interested in keeping a chameleon as a pet.
Thanks.

It's not too bad.. the initial cost of setup is probably the largest burdon.. You are welcomed to email me; or, if you'd like to start another thread in general that would also be fine.

My Y! messenger ID is also in my profile.

umm... no. SUSE has never claimed it was a gecko... as the link posted previously obviously points out, it is a chameleon.

Its a chameleon. All references I have seen since I started using the 7.x version of Suse have always referred to the mascot as a chameleon.

To clarify things a bit: It is a Chameleon (no doubt) but his name is Geeko.
http://slashdot.org/articles/00/03/01/0754201.shtml

Most confusing... as someone wrote at /. "Do we call the Linux penguin "Ducky"?".

LOL!

He's no killer... they're not even remotely scary.. even when they do bite, it's not very painful and almost never draws blood... now a Panther chameleon.. while being the most colorful/beautiful.. do have a tendancy to have a nasty temper.. but still... they're only chameleons... not like it's a 4-foot Nile Monitor wanting to eat your soul!
