Video and resolution

I installed Suse Tumbleweed on my computer.
It works fine, but I can only get 1024x768 resolution.
I use 1280x1024 in WinBlows.
When I first did the install of Suse, at some point it complains about my video with some message about the driver being "experimental". Don't know why that would be as it is not a new computer. When I said yes to the question to use the driver, the result was unusable. (screen froze up with gibberish). I had to start over and re-install Suse with the generic video driver selection. So, it works, but I would rather have better resolution. How can I get this?

The first question I should ask is "How do I find out what video system I have?" I see a reference to an app called "inxi". Will that identify my video and required drivers? Is there some other diagnostic tool I should use? After I can identify the video then the next question will be - how to get drivers and install them.

I tried that and the inxi command. Here is what I got...

command:
/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -EiA3 'vga|display|3d'

output:
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] [10de:03d0] (rev a2)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:2a6c]
Kernel driver in use: nouveau
Kernel modules: nouveau

command:
inxi -G

output:
Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] driver: nouveau v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.org 1.20.8 driver: nouveau unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa
resolution: <xdpyinfo missing>
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0 128 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 20.1.1

So apparently it is an NVIDIA GeForce thing.

Code:
Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430]
And you are using
Code:
driver: nouveau v: kernel
General info. Decide for yourself if you want to use Nvidia or open source kernel module for your hardware.

@ Sauerland :
"Use Code-Tags, the small # in the advanced Editor."
Sorry, don't know what that means.

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The output from that is excessively long.
I appologise: but here is what it says:

These links lead to books of information, which, perhaps, with several days to a week of time I might be able to figure out what it is talking about. Or perhaps not. I am just looking for information on how to install a driver that might give me better resolution.
If it works - great! If it doesn't, I will live with it.

Just to be thorough, when you say

Quote:
I can only get 1024x768 resolution.
could you explain exactly what you tried before posting your question?

Also, as already requested, please surround terminal output with "code" tags which become available when you click the "Advanced" button beneath the compose/edit post window. It makes terminal output much easier to read.

IGPs with NForce 430 chipsets are often quite troublesome. Recent threads here about them include:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...em-4175677206/
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...th-4175676108/

I have one myself working OK, using only FOSS, with:
  • openSUSE Tumbleweed
  • openSUSE 15.1
  • openSUSE 15.2
  • Debian Buster

Try the suggestions in those threads and report back here your results if you're unable to get modesetting or nouveau to give you 1280x1024. First, make sure your RAM is still good. Your IGP shares system RAM.

I finally got it to work

I finally got it to work. I got higher resolution in Suse.
It is hard to remember all the things I tried, but I think I might reconstruct
it accurately something like this...

1. Look up the card with
$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"

2. Use this page:
https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/
To find the code name and product family names for the card
(in my case GeForce6150SE and nForce 430)

3. Use this page:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
to search for a driver using your product names
(in my case type:GeForce, series:GeForce 6 Series, os:Linux 64-bit,
download-type:Linux long lived)

4. Find a driver and look under "supported products" to make sure your card
is listed among the models supported by that driver. Download it.
In my case NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-304.137.run

5. I looked up .run files. They are supposed to be executable, but may not
come marked as such (this one didn't). And running it is tricky. You have to
be root and not running any X server functions. Save the .run file and then
run it...

6. Log Out! Do not shutdown, log out.
Then press control-alt-F1 and log in as the user. Go to where you saved the
.run file. Become root (su). use chmod and chown and chgrp to make the run
file yours. Then use a brute-force command to kill all graphical processes:
As root: killall /usr/bin/X

7. exit
return to your (user, not root) shell and type sudo ./{filename}
where {filename} is the name of the .run file.
(as in NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-304.137.run)

* You must have no X programs running and you must have root privilege
or this will not work.

8. It will ask you questions. say "Accept" and "yes" to the file question.

9. Now shut down and reboot.
When you come back up, you should be able to select a higher resolution
from the graphical menu under "settings". I did. It worked.
