Upgrade from KDE 3.2 to 3.3 broke System Notifications...

...in SUSE 9.1. I have SUSE 9.1 Personal. I put the suse ftp folder and the KDE 3.3 ftp section into YAST as a instalation source. I upgraded to KDE 3.3 using YAST.

Only glitch now is that KDE's System Notification no longer works. All other programs play sounds fine like XMMS and what not.

I went to Control Panel - Sound & Multimedia - Sound System, and clicked Test Sound. It played a test sound correctly. After several hours of research, I come to belive that the root cause is Knotify. When I try starting knotify in Konsole I get the "no such command" error.

I also noticed that one of the KDE packages I updated screwed up all my screen savers.

I'm wondering if it might just be easier buying SUSE 9.2 which comes with most the packages I'm trying to update any way.

This worked in my 9.2 release (some details may vary in 9.1)
Start kwrite with root permissions and open this file:

/opt/kde3/bin/startkde

Within kwrite click on View > Show Line Numbers
Goto line 357 and add the following:

test -n "$KDEWM" && KDEWM="--windowmanager $KDEWM"
kdeinit +knotify
kwrapper ksmserver $KDEWM

Save the file and reboot.

Thanks. This worked for me with 9.1, I only had to add the second line (kdeinit +knotify). I had almost given up looking for an answer.

I'm glad it worked. And thanks for the feedback on the precise 9.1 fix.
That is something I'll make a note of.

Hi you,

THANK YOU, I had this problem too and it solved, but when I restart the sound system in kcontrol, it crashes kde, beside this, my mouse style had gone. So I tried this:

In /opt/kde3/bin/startkde line 241:

LD_BIND_NOW=true
kdeinit +kcminit

Just an "enter" before "kdeinit". And delet the other entry for kdeinit.

In ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc, add this in Start Progress session:

KNotify Init=true

It'll be like this:

[StartProgress]
Arts Init=true
KNotify Init=true
Use Arts=true

Now knotify works just fine, btw i'm using Suse 9.2 Pro, with kde 3.4 level "a". I think there is a problem executing kdeinit after LD_BIND_NOW=true. Anyway thats it.

By.
