Hi i just installed Suse 9.3 on my amd 64. I tried installing gaim but there r too many dependencies due to which im not able to install gaim. Downloading and installing the dependencies will be too hectic...but do i have to do it newayz? Isnt there an option...or something which downloads and installs all the dependencies and gaim automatically?
Using 9.2, I am usually able to add software by adding a few different sources to my "Change Sources" list. You might want to find the 9.3 version, but here is what i run (I try to keep them turned "off" unless i have dependency issues, as the sometimes make more trouble than they solve)

Again, find the 9.3 sources. Also, Gaim is a GNOME program, so you might need to find GNOME sources (but I was able to do the install with the above sources just fine)

I didnt make out nething outta the above three replies.... sorry lefty.crupps
And i do have the suse 9.3 dvd.
When i used Suse 9.2 it installed fine on its own. Dunno what happ in 9.3...I just dont understand why do they even provide the RPM when they cant solve the dependencies on its own?!?
OK, when I said "add sources" I meant:
1. Go into SuSE's Control Center
2. Select "YaST2"
3. Select "Software"
4. Select "Change Source of Installation"
5. and add the links that I gave above. You'll have to add the first part (ftp.somewhere.org) on one line of the wizard and the end (public/suse/yada/yada/yada/9.3) on the next line...
6. Make sure they're "on/Enabled" and accept the changes
7. Then, in the Software section still, go to "Add and Remove Software" (these lables might be a bit off, this is from memory, but you'll figure it out) and search for Gaim.
What the hell....gaim started working fine...all i did is tht i said ignore all dependencies in yast...newayz now its working! Thanx for ur support guys.
I'm having a bit of trouble too... I downloaded the source RPM for Gaim from gaim.sourceforge.net, but whenever I try to install it, YaST tries to install the older version that's on the SuSE instalation dvd. I tried adding the directory where the RPM is located to the source locations, but it still didn't seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? Also, did I download the right file? All that's really listed are Fedora and RedHat rpms... Do I just try one of those?
On a related note, sometimes I'm unable to actually do anything. Normally Konqueror opens, but sometimes nothing happens at all. Any ideas on what's causing this?
Look at post #8 and turn OFF the dvd as a source. Then, to install your GAIM (which may or may not work if its not built for SuSE) right-click it and select "install with yast"
Thanks for the reply. I already turned off the dvd, but it stiill didnt' work. Also, when I righ click there's no option for installing. Only opening, and at the moment it seems to be in its little phase of not actually opening yast...
Did I download the correct rpm? If there's not one that's for suse, what should I do?
If you install mozilla/firefox that will probably bring in the dependences needed.
Seemed to work for me
Or was it evolution that brought the deps, you need the gnome base files I think.

Hey,
I just did it with the tar.gz file instead of an RPM and it seemed to be OK. Just had to install the dependencies. Now I have to find where it installed to make the launcher
