Talking Suse 9.1 Pro / External USB Maxtor

Hello Everybody,

I built a PC a while back and it ran fine for a while.. I tried to get my USB Maxtor hd hooked up and .. oops .. the box will not come back up.

With the USB HD, POST would hang after finding my primary/slave HD's and
CD's (two 160g internal HD's, 1 CD reader and 1 CDRW/DVDRW). When I
had the USB HD, pre-formatted w/NTFS, POST would work but I failed on
the install (with the same symptoms I will post in a minute). After powering
down the USB HD, the install went fine ... Then I hot-plugged the USB HD,
formatted it and copied some data over to it, powered down the USB HD and shutdown the machine... Just tried to bring up the box (tried it both
ways... with and w/out the USB HD) .. and it fails..

First symptoms that I noticed (I'm not very familar w/SuSe) was a failure
for /dev/sda5 .. followed by a 'cannot find keymap for us, taking fallback'
message. This is followed by an error for /usr/sbin/hwinfo that cannot be
found ... and finally ... a fsck failure .. re-try manually message ??? .

Hardware info : Asrock MB, 2.4MHz, 1g RAM, two 160G HD's (one is ATA100
and the other ATA133.. BIOS is fine but YaST only gives me 152 on one and
147g on the other... fsck does complain about my DMA being off but the BIOS does not), one IDE cd drive and one CD/RW+DVD/RW drive). The USB
hd is a Maxtor 300g.

Also, I do also have problem with SuSe finding my wireless (USB) D-LINK.

Do I have to re-install again ??.

Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Upgrade your motherboard BIOS and upgrade to Suse 9.3. It is motherboard dependent, but perhaps Suse 9.3 can work around it. Perhaps not. The other option is to turn it on after you boot up or get a usb 2.0 PCI addon card for 20 bucks.
