you cant just post random lines and quotes from log files or output and guess someone knows exactly what you are having a problem with, what errors you get, when you get those errors (what command you did to get the errors), what hardware you run, what you have already tried to do and wont work, what..etc..etc..

i already said this in your other thread.
also dont make multiple threads about the same problem your having, if you think it will get more exposure.

please include the information i just mentioned if you want my help

edit: read this tutorial written by one of the moderators at lq.org: http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...Ask_a_Question

Ok

I have a KDS 40GB, 512MB, Pentium 3 Laptop. I'm using an external Serial Modem. When I originally installed Suse 10, the software found my sound card(M5451 ali). The driver is trident. After install, I went to the sound Config section and it stated sound card 0 ali 5451 is configured as. when i clicked finish, It said error. One minute it says its configured, but when I click finish on the configue sound card, it says error. I have a speaker off Icon on my tool bar, when I click on it , it says no sound elements installed or gstreamer problem. My acpi worked fine until I did an online update, after that it was history. When the system boots up, and the desktop starts to show up, it stops with an error message that No acpi events found/acpi daemon may not be running.

when you were configuring the sound and clicked finish then it gave you an error.. what was the error? did it say you didnt have permissions or something similar? can you try doing whatever you were doing again, but as the 'root' user, so that it can modify any necessary files, with the appropriate permission to do so?

try opening a terminal.. log in as root (sudo su) and try to run 'alsactl' or 'alsamixer' and change the settings for your soundcard... does that help at all? what are the errors if any?

edit: i guess you just tried the alsa stuff as i was posting..

you dont need to (and i dont think are ALLOWED to) offer money to people for helping here at lq.org.

anyone who helps others on this site is doing it because they want to, not to get paid.. so keep your money!

open a terminal, switch to the root user and use the 'modprobe' command to insert each of these modules (drivers), if they arent already loaded:
Code:
modprobe snd-ali5451
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
modprobe snd-mixer-oss
modprobe snd-seq-oss
then try and configure your sound card's settings with 'alsamixer', then alsactl

what is the result of all of this?

Something strange...

Originally it showed as Ali 5451 configured as soundcard 0. Now it says "soundcard" is configured, and Ali 5451 is not configured. When I click edit to configure the Ali card, then click finish for ANY setting(quick/normal..etc) I get an error message of snd_ali5451 could not be loaded - incorrect parameters- IO / IRQ.

i looked at alsa site and it says the ali cards are supported.. but your specific one isnt supported; but of course may (and probably will) still work.

read here: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...=ali5451#intro

if that doesnt work or you dont want to, i would say go through the entire sound setup again. i dont use suse so i dont know how it deals with the sound setup in the GUI.

besides these 2 points i cant help further.
did you already search on google or lq.org for this sound card and problem?

read this thread if it helps: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ight=M5451+ali

I went on Alsa's site. They showed Ali 5451 as supported????

I tried doing what they said, but every time I try to enter something, It says Permission Denied. What if I bought a new soundcard online. Can you recommend one that would definitely work. Thanks, Doug

i dont think you have to buy a new soundcard.

it would say permission denied because the user running the command (you) dont have access to read/write to a certain location. use the sudo command to become root and try the commands again.

what is the output of 'lsmod'?
