Yesterday I tried to install SUSE 10.0 from an ftp install.
What a dissapointment whilst you a greeted with a nice splash screen thats about it for the enjoyable part of an install. I was expecting an ftp installer at least the quality of the debian ftp installer. You would expect this as SUSE-Novell is a major player and/or would like to be considered at this level.
It didn't offer me an opportunity to setup and configure my partitions or at least it didn't prior to freezing after inputting IP address to install from. Maybe the developers should look at the basic but effective debian net install, your disks are setup, dhcp configured, your location selected and you are offered a choice of local mirrors to continue your install from.
I am pissed off because I want to try SUSe 10 but this dodgy installer forbids it. It lacks the class of product you would expect from SUSe. I refuse to download 3.3GB on 5 disks when i am only likely to install 1.8 to 2.2GB of software and then update all the outdated packages. Thats 3.5GB plus I only have a 10GB a month limit. FTP offers the choice to install only what you want from source all fresh. Whats more where is it installing the OS my disks haven't been partitioned little if no info given to the user.
This will be an important step as the quantity of programs ballons eg Debian 14 CD's. Today I am angry at Suse but it will be a challenge for Fedora soon as well with them reaching 4 Cd's + 1 extras.
Come on SuSe honestly whilst everything free is lovely, I would part with some hard earned for a good ftp install to save me bandwidth and usage.
Check out this post and there are probably more SUse ftp forum
Did you try using a different mirror or checking out that maybe it could be a problem with your hardware. Its so easy to rush a blame the distro maintainer when the problem could be elsewhere.
I tried 3 diffrent IP addresses only 1 partially worked in that it allowed me to input the path to the inst-source but there it froze as well. I was disaapointed because these are not issues you should have to enounter. And you definitely don't get them well I didn't when trying the Debian ftp install.

If you're willing to part with cash, why not just buy the disks. . ?
Because I am willing to pay for the download or the relative cost of them having to pay for the hosting which shouldn't be anywhere near as much as sending the box to me which in Australia is $100 which is alot of money here.
when I looked at the post for guidance all the questions were this was the IP before where is it know the path has changed and so forth, but why can debian have a nice list of five or so nirrors in my area that I can choose and hats it.
It just seems to lack attention to detail, that is just my opinion. But if i am expressing troubles and a post a mile long is showing users are having great difficulty, what about all the users that never posted, will they try linux again I wouldn't want this installer to be somebody's first impresion of linux.
I have suse 10 on my computer and its awesome, befor i was useing Gentoo which i thought was really good. The only reason you need so meny disk is because of how fance the installer it. Talk about graphical =P
And reddazz how did you do that to linux, iv done stuff like that to Windows befor

I'm going to assume you're talking about the screenie in his sig and then I'm gonna assume this is about the info etc on the right of his desktop. If I'm right in my guessing game, the correct answer is SuperKaramba!!! Can I have a cookie?

I am using a modified cynapses superkaramba theme and the liquid weather++ theme using the cynapses skin. The Start button is a modified kbfx button. You can get all of these goodies at kde-look.org. I got tired of blue and I am seriously into black, gray and white at the moment.
Because I've been on the receiving end of complaints in situations that seem similar to this, I'd just like to note that the problem you were experiencing seems to be a connectivity problem, not a software problem. I don't think it's really good form to blame Novell or the mirrors who have been thoroughly swamped lately because a free FTP install failed at some point. When I was trying to download 10.0 for testing, I spent several hours looking for a mirror that didn't time out eventually.
I've just recently started to use Suse10 and I think it is wonderful for a desktop linux, but am quickly finding it is not very good at anything else in terms of administration!
Regarding the ftp install I feel that why I do agree with my lack of patience due to connectivity, however I will state however that I do think its function in finding a server to download from should be more Standalone ie. you need a functioning system to determine the IP and path to the server it cannot be done or sourced from within the install (at least I couldn't). This is a bug bear to me only because a the debian installer identifies servers based on your locality and lets you choose from a list. I couldn't just give a friend the disk and say have fun installing because I will soon be asked what Ip and path do I put in ?
As for system administration I am really enjoying yast2 POwertweak, easily add remove repositories (I only know of Pacman). I am running 4 differnet yast screens at once and loving it
My complaints about the installer aside, once you have SUse 10 up and running it is awesome. a big CONGRATS to Suse/Novell there.
