suse 10.0 monitor problem

just installed suse 10.0. looked like everything went smoothly, but i'm having the exact same problem i had when i tried to install mandriva. the monitor gives me an error message saying that the resolution is out of range when it tries to go into the GUI. i need to know how to get to a configuration program or file so that i can change the settings. i know the horizontal and vert refresh rate, but need to input them. anyone have ideas? i want to see my GUI!

i have tried to do that from failsafe mode. the configuration program freezes up before it shows the current config. so i can't do anything with that program.
