serious ati problems!

ive been working with some people on another forum for about a week trying to get suse to even detect my ati radeon 9250 128 mb pci card. ive done 4 install on the same machine in the past week. these are some of the command ive been told to try. i appologize i am very new to linux.

sax2 - r -m 0=vesa

ive also tried 1= vesa becase when i typ sax2 -p it says: chip 0 is intel (thats the onboard chip)
chip 1 is ati.

when use these commands i get: try to call sax2 -p and select a single device.

i cannot get through yast. everything works except for graphics and monitor section when i choose this it just locks up and i have to hit ctrl alt backsp to get out.

when i check the xorg.conf file it is all but empty. there is know reference to my monitor(which makes sences if my grphics arent detected) and know reference to either graphics cards. intel is off in the bios.

during the suse install at the hardware config section my monitor and graphics section said "no proposal"

i was told i had to get the vesa driver to work before i install the ati driver. i have no GUI and cannot startx. and by the way this is suse 10.2

anyone have any ideas?

to initially install the PCI card

Disable the onboard intel in Bios

then try

Once you get it working and want to use the Intel reenable it.

that is exactly what i did.

i installed with onbard graphics off. now its like i have no graphics card at all. the ati card is plugged in and my monitor is hooked to it. that is how i installed suse. during the installation. at the hardware confit section. the part for graphics and monitor read "no proposal" it was not even detected.

As a complete Linux newbie myself I have/had a very similar problem, installing openSUSE 10.2 on dimension 2400 with radeon 9250 installed, dell bios not allowing me to disable to onboard intel video.
What finally worked for me was using "Sax2 -c 1" to designate the ati card. I realize this post is a bit old but maybe will still help someone
