hplip 9.7 was out when SuSE 10.0 shipped but they still used the older 9.4. The PSC 1400 series requires 9.7 to work. When I installed the newer hplip I used the hp.com website which excellent specific directions for SuSE. SuSE 10.1 has the newer hplip.

Thanks for your help. I just solved it!

I did the following:
-I deleted the hplip RPM that came with suse 10.0
-I installed a newer hplip that I compiled using the instructions here:
hplip.sourceforge.net/install/step2/suse10.html

It works great now. Thanks for you help!
