RE-install firefox

I had previously downloaded and installed Firefox from www.mozilla.org by doing a

tar -xzvf firefox-installer-1.0.1.tar.gz
cd firefox-installer
./firefox-installer

Now that there is a security udpate to Firefox, I had download the updated Firefox (firefox-installer-1.0.2.tar.gz) and tried to do a similiar install :

a. over the previous install, but can't
b. manually deleted the previous installed folder and reinstall, still can't.

Did I do anything right :-)
or there should be more keystroke that I should be make.

I am unable to type here the error message as my linux box is not with me now

The same experience for the Thunderbird udpate.

But the way, is this called installation from source?

All advise appreciated.

Using firefox-installer is not installing from source, that is a binary package.

Without the error message it is pretty hard to determine what is wrong. Do you have write privilages to the directory you were installing to?

yes, I do have full access using "su"

Any idea, how can I properly (not just deleted folder ) fully uninstall the earlier version that I had installed?

As the user who has access to the display, run:
xhost +localhost

To share with all what I had done in sequence, hope this info will eventually be useful to others :

In konsole, "su" mode, installation no-go
In konsole, "sux" mode, instalation still no-go

In KDE, clicked the firefox-installer script:
a. Firefox installation started.
b. Ask to confirm deletion of previous installation folder.
c. After confirm delete, installation window closed.
That is, just like the app crashed.

When back to konsole, checked and confirmed that the files in the folder is all deleted (by above). Issued the following command:
su
tar -xzvf firefox-1.0.2.installer.tar.gz
cd firefox-installer
./firefox-installer
Firefox installed but with some error message (forgot to capture).
Goes back to X and Firefox is working as normal (so far).

Many thanks for the ideas and advise.
