no root login

Hi I recently installed SUSe 9.1 pro

I had made a guest user (excet for the root)

this guest was automatically loaded when the system starts. I could switch to the root account by simply switching users.
Then I played around with the different environments ( GNOME, BlackBox) and then at some point I realized that I cannot login into the root account anymore
when I type at the login promt root and the pasword ( which is also root jk ) it again logs me into the guest account and I still cannot access the root folder and some other options from some programs.
So how can I get my root account working again.
I still can modify files by using the super user file manager and some programs ask me for the root password to do changes... but some don't and that is pretty annoying

thanks in advance

boot your computer from your SuSE CD and choose install from the boot menu. When YaST loads up choose to update existing system then chose to update only installed packages. after it gets done updating you will get a screen that gives a summery of new additions to SuSE 9.1 and at the bottom of the screen there should be a check box that will open up YaST check it and hit OK. Now that your in YaST go to your user management and edit your root user and you will have the option of changing the root password. when your done accept everything and your system should finish booting and you should now be able to log in with root.

With how easy this is to change your root password, when your done you should also set your bios so that your system wont boot from the CD drive and put a password on your bios setup, just make sure it's something you can remember or you could get into some real trouble.

I have a similar but not so dire situation. I can successfully use "su" and "su -" from my user account but when I try to log into a new session as root I'm always sent to Yast and when I terminate Yast my session is terminated. I'm still able to admin my system but my access to GUI in that mode is limited.
