can only login as root? user login doesnt work..? anyone?

everytime i try and "startx" with a user other than root it
says that it can not startx. it also says

No write accest to $HOME directory (/). <<<this error second

and

couonot read network connection list << this error first
//.DCOPserver_console__0

console being the username....

I'm going to guess that your user doesn't have a home directory, since it displays "/" as $HOME
Normal users don't typically have write access to the system root (/), so you'll want to create a directory in /home that will be used as $HOME for the user.
Not sure what the problem with X is, but it may stem from the same issue.
