no compiler found in opensuse10.3

I am no being able to install anything on my system
whenever i run ./configure i get the following message

no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

when i typed gcc it said
command not found
there was no manual entry for it too
when i typed whereis gcc i got the output as
/usr/lib/gcc
on exploring the directory i found that it had a linear directory as
/usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.2.1 which contained cc1 file

when i tried installing gcc i encountered the following error when ./configure
no acceptable cc found in $PATH

plzz help i m stuck big time

Install gcc from the package. Use the YaST2 package manager.

the machine having my suse linux has no net access...hence m not being able
to access the community repository thru yast....more importantly ill like to install from source

If you have the cd or dvd set (not the live versions), you can install gcc using YAST. CC is usually a link to a c compiler and on Linux, the compiler is gcc and thats why you need to install it.

You can disable the internet repositories in the YaST2 installation sources configuration. Then they won't be called for and it will install from the disc instead.

You need to get the full CD/DVD set and not the KDE or GNOME versions. The GNOME and KDE versions don't include many development tools. As for openSUSE 10.3 not including gcc, thats just false. Its available if you have the right media.

go to opensuse.org and simply select your options: should be 32-bit pc, DVD, FTP.
and you will get the following iso image you burn to dvd media, it has both kde, gnome, and development stuff.
this is how i installed opensuse 10.3 on an old pc and it had GCC available.

i m really sorry for posing so many restrictions.....
i should mention that i dont have a DVD rom on my system ..hence i have to resort to cd version
the download section offers either a kde or a gnome version wherein i chose kde . plus there was another addon cd which def has no trace of gcc

now should i download the gcc version also to get the complete repository or is it that i have missed somewhere n there is an option for complete cd version

The add-on cd contains proprietary software, so you won't find gcc on there. Unfortunately after looking at the openSUSE site, it does not seem like they released a 5 cd set for 10.3, so if you do not have a dvd drive, you are going to find it a bit tough to add extra apps. If you had a good net connection, you could have added the online installation sources for openSUSE 10.3 to your YAST sources.

Another possibility, is to download the DVD ISO image somewhere, and transfer it on your computer. Then you can add a "Local ISO image" as installation source. The transfer can be done by an external hard drive or by splitting the image into parts, burn them on CDs and finally put them together on your hard disk. Just an idea.
