new installation SUSE 11, runlevel 1 on tiny window, bash commands unrecognised
SUSE 11, Linux unfriendly Asus 9rp laptop. I ran the complete media-checked installation 3 times, always defaulting into a tiny command line window in top left corner, and when i tried to get runlevel 5, using telinit 5 or init 5, bash kept saying command unknown. Other commands were unrecognised, but some, like man man were recognised. I wrote Konqueror and it went into Konqueror, but on a miniature window that could not be enlarged, again top left of screen, though larger than the command line window, and slightly to the right of it.
SuSE 10.2 and 10.3 could not even be installed on this computer, inspite of the emphatic reassurances of the salesman. (I felt sorry for him, three children, saving money for a very long time just to get eyeglasses, and so would not consider taking the computer back for a refund.) Meanwhile i got SLED 10 SP1 from Linux Magazine, which is "SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop" equivalent to SuSE 10, and it ran relatively well, but with bad hardware incompatibilities: no sound, not Internet.
Alas that SuSE 11 is not even as good as SLED 10. I love this distro.
Please, dear brothers and sisters of Linux community, help if you can. We are the love mode. Money will never do what love can do; and the day is coming when this world will run with surpassing beauty on love, and money is no more; we are precursors. AND LINUX HAS COME A VERY LONG WAY!!
I assume you are running the init 5 command as root. Konqueror and man commands will run as user.
I have the same situation w/Suse Linux 9.2 except with Kwrite (the tiny window) but I am able to maximize it. Same situation with Opensuse 10.3 except it is with text editor Kate.
Yancek, i don't see my last reply to thread, with gratitude to you. Thank you very much. It worked out strangely. OpenSuSE 11 REINSTALLED on this Asus 9rp laptop, this time an automatic installation, defaults only, and KDE 4. Seems the computer will absolutely not run earlier versions of SuSE (except enterprise) and KDE. Your advice was excellent, caught me by an unexpected tangent, but couldn't be checked, because that earlier installation was already gone.
NEW problems occurred now, when i went back into the installation disk and added some applications and utilities, but particularly the addition of Kerry Beagle, which indexes home folder and whatever else is wanted. Then the desktop would be locked upon booting, absolutely locked, useless. ^+Alt+backspace twice wouldn't stop it, nor ^+Alt+del, nor anything. Son and i even joked because the power button didn't work, until i held it down for many seconds. Looked as though even the removal of the battery pack couldn't break that lock. Anyhow, it had to be installed again, and then i didn't add Kerry Beagle, and didn't dare look around for any utilities, only added a few applications like Inkscape, that wouldn't affect the system.
I am completely delighted; because the SuSE 11 developers have provided a very full and rich OS, and nothing is really needed, although i have yet to verify that there is an indexing search tool automatically installed, that will do the work of Kerry Beagle.
Your advice, again, was startlingly correct, and thank you so much.
Glad you finally found a solution for your problem. With regard to the power button and freezing, most computers will reboot if nothing else works if the power button is held down for five or more seconds.
