Question Init and runlevel commands

I was trying to install an nvidia driver and was informed that I couldn't install it from within an xwindow. So broke out a couple of books and found the init command. I su'd and tried to run init3 with no success. So I tried init 3 both times I was given the 'command not found' message. When I found the init command I also found the runlevel command to determine the level which you are running. This didn't work either.

I was able to install the driver by changing the inittab file, but was curious to know why these commands didn't work.

I am running RH 9.0.

Just wondering. Thanks,

Were you full root? Open an x terminal and:
Code:
Sat Nov 22 05:59pm fancy@tinwhistle ~$ su -
Password:
Sat Nov 22 05:59pm root@tinwhistle ~ #
Now the x-terminal has full root power

/etc/inittab file:
Code:
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:3:initdefault:
