Microsoft Intellimouse Install Problem

Suse 10.1 on a Compaq 1830
No Intellimouse 1.1A - 2 button w Roller
PS/2 Compatible isn't working.

Well I tried option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" and it seems to have killed the X-Server!
So that I could post what's in the xOrg file I attached my USB Memory Stick thinking it would work - like plug and play in XP. I looked in Desktop preferences and it showed "Mount removable media when inserted " as being checked. So I thought I should see my jump drive (aka Memory Stick) !

I DONT - why ?

In xOrg I do see two input devices - My touchpad and the mouse.
saX2 does show a second mouse - ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse but it is responding to the touchPad events just like the synaptics Mouse 1.

It seems the OS sees both the mouse and the touchpad and when I test the mouse, nothing happens with the mouse controls. Instead it responds to the touchpad.

Boy am I perplexed! Do we report these things back to SUSE since this is a pretty plain vanilla Laptop ( Compaq Presario 1830) with a plain vanilla mouse?

TIA
Bob

Have you tried YaST2 - Hardware - Mouse Model to configure the mouse?

What does 'hwinfo --mouse' show you?

Mine looks like this:

hwinfo --mouse
16: PS/2 00.0: 10500 PS/2 Mouse
[Created at input.140]
Unique ID: AH6Q.hI1e_vHaTSC
Hardware Class: mouse
Model: "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse"
Vendor: int 0x0210
Device: int 0x0013 "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse"
Device File: /dev/input/mice (/dev/input/mouse1)
Device Number: char 13:63 (char 13:33)
Driver Info #0:
Buttons: 3
Wheels: 1
XFree86 Protocol: explorerps/2
GPM Protocol: exps2
Config Status: cfg=yes, avail=yes, need=yes, active=unknown

It's a Intellimouse 1.1A mouse.
