I have a MS Intellimouse with Mandrake 9.1 (kernel 2.4.21-0.13mdk). My XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11/ has the following section:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

The XF86Config file has:

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

This might not be the same as Slack, but it might give you a few clues.
