Lost KDE

I was running Suse 9.2 with KDE3.3 and I saw that 3.4 was available in rpm format so I selected it with Synaptic along with a few other applications. Now I have no Gui, I am greated with a commandline login. Once I login and startx, it starts fvwm and not KDE like it used to.
Firstly how do I get it to startx automatically? and How do I then get it to use KDE (assuming that the splashpage is missing)?

TIA

I did that with the YOU installer and ended up having to redo everything.

Have you tried logging in as root then starting kdm. From there you should be able to choose your desktop.

Is kde 3.4 available in YOU then i can't see it?

No. I'd be really interested to know how jdblick did that

bearwood: the only reason I can imagine is that the update was not complete and you still have 'old' KDE 3.3 packages installed. You could check this by typing 'rpm -qa | grep kde' on commandline and compare the version numbers.

9.1 ships with kde 3.2. I added the mirrors in the sticky in YOU and tried to get 3.3 but I guess I didn't get all of it. I had to start over.

OK, I think I get it.

Yast software installation is not YOU! YOU is the online update function of yast and not able to install new versions (only security updates and patches). So I guess this is just a missunderstanding of names.

OK the results from grep: The only ones I can see that are not 3.4 are to do with bindings (I'm not even sure what they are about) or xmms. What is the kdebase3-SuSE-9.2-7.1 thing for?

Looks fine to me. I don't think the kdebindings packages cause the trouble, but maybe you should remove them (I have none of them installed). kdebase3-SuSE contains the files that make the SuSE-look, but usually they work quite well with higher versions of KDE.
Have you tried to start with startkde instead of startx?

EDIT: or did you mean the command? On my system only root can execute it. Sorry, I obviously have a problem with very short sentences

EDIT2: seems I learn a lot from this thread. startkde doesn't work since it seems to need a running X server.

I deleted the bindings rpms - no difference
I can only startx from normal user, it fails from root. Tried startkde, startkdm and many other things but no good. I am going to reload suse again as this fvwm is driving me crazy (seems like it is only half working) and I need a workable computer as the wife and kids are on my case. I would have liked to have got to the bottom of this one but time is not permitting.

tahnks all
