Internal modem intel-536ep - solved

Internal modem Intel-536ep for openSUSE 10.2 solved

For some reason the uncompiled drivers for modem chipset intel-536ep downloadable from Intel.com do not compile on this distro - work fine on others, but not this fantastic distro.

download the driver from this link [many thanks Ubuntu wiki!]:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pack...21_09_2006.tgz

New linux users:
check out out the readme.txt file after downloading and extracting for simple instructions how to install.

I understand that having to download a module from the internet to get access to the internet is frustrating but this is the price to pay for using internal winmodems - so do it and don't winge and don't encourage 'em by buying this crappy device or others not on a Hardware Compatibility List
and while I'm rolling don't use .wmv, .wma and don't buy BluRay or Vista.

Need help on this problem though which I have never come across on any other distro:
After successfully installing the module I can only connect to ISP with modem as root using kppp dialup program.

When starting kppp as a user I get an error prompt:
----------------------------------
you dont have sufficient permissions to run

/usr/sbin/pppd

Please make sure that kppp is owned by root and has the SUID bit set.
<OK-button>
----------------------------------

When I click 'OK' and try to connect I get this error in kppp:
Unable to create modem lock file

I have checked and I am certain that /usr/sbin/pppd has group permission set to 'dialout' group - of which all users by default are members of. This I have double checked and ensured my user profile has dialout as a group permission.

Any suggestions on this are greatly appreciated!

If you'll search the Suse forums (Modem Lock File - SuSe 10.2) you'll find a repair solution. If the driver wasn't installed by YaST, I believe I read another way is by adding a command for YaST and this will let you work from the user mode.
