help opensuse 10.3: logon goes to prompt no KDE anymore ???

i installed opensuse 10.3 on a pc successfully.
did a bunch of updates from the main update respository or whatever it's called.
I rebooted a few times, everything was fine, then shut the machine down for the night.
This morning I power it up, I get the green screen showing
OpenSuse 10.3-2.6.22.16.-0.2
Failsafe opensuse 10.3-2.6.22.16-0.2
(boot options below, I leave blank)

when i either let it go automatically or select opensuse it dumps me out to a blank screen with a single login prompt. I login as root and I still have that type of layout, a completely blank screen with a single prompt at the bottom, successfully logged in as root.

How do i fix or what do i need to change to get the screen back where it lets you choose the desktop environment when you log in? Before, I was able to select from KDE, KDE4, Gnome, and so on. I'd like that back, but all I want really is for it to start kde.

If it is possible to login as root try the command startx
The command even works in the failsafe
The command should start up the xserver and as I am always use kde

startx did work, but I could not find a way to correct the problem of not having a graphical login screen.
so I am just reinstalling 10.3

thanks
