Samba/RH9/WinXP No Logon Prompt

Hi,

I have successfully published a Samba share to the network, but the success is something I don't quite follow. I am using the Samba GUI in RH9. Here is where I'm confused:

1. If I set up Share authentication, and then specify that the share is only for certain users, then I can access and use the Shared folder ONLY if the Windows username is set up ahead of time in the Samba users section. Otherwise, Windows (XP) simply reports that the "specified network password is not correct."

Question: Why isn't Windows providing me a log on prompt?

2. If I use User authentication, I am unable to connect. I get an immediate "Access is Denied" on XP.

Question: Why isn't Windows providing me a log on prompt?

3. If I follow the steps in item 1, but set the share as being available to all users, I am able to use the share fine.

Question: Why? Isn't Windows passing my Windows username, which is not set up in Samba? If so, how could I possibly have permission to use the share? Guest access is OFF.

Any help clearing this up would be great.

Thanks!!

Mike...

In order to access the share, Windows sends the username and password that was used when you log into the windowsXP system.

If a share is setup to give access to all users, then all users with a valid username and password on the server will have access to it.
Guest ok or public allows access to users with no user account on the server.
