File Deleting?? space lost??

I tried to delete a huge directory "Backup4Windows" from my SuSE 10.0, which is about 25Giga or so.

During the deleting process, the scrollbar doesn't move at all (that's to say, it looked like nothing was being deleted). I clicked "close" to close the deleting window. The folder "Backup4Windows" was not there at all.

I thought I might have deleted everything, and in trash, nothing was there.

However, when I "df", still a lot of space has been used.

My SUSE distribute is about 60Giga, and at most, the current usage should be no more than 50%. But now, it's still 88%, and most of the spaces are occupied by the father directory of "Backup4Windows", which means that--

althought I tried to delete "Backup4Windows", I might have succeeded in deleting the file system of that folder, but failed to delete the exact contents in it. right??

Can anybody help? It seems that SuSE 10.0's file system has some problem!!!

Cheers
JIA Pei

The one thing I have noticed about deleting files is that it seems to take a whole lot longer when I do it through the GUI vs deleting files/folders through the command line, especially with large files. I recently deleted WoW off of my HDD and had I done it through the GUI I would not have been surprised if it would have taken 15-20 min. but through the command line it took a few seconds.

Try opening up a command line (alt + f2, then konsole) type "rm -rd ~/Backup4Windows/" where ~ is the path to the directory ie if Backup4Windows is located in your home the path would be /home/username/Backup4Windows/. be careful though a mistake with the path using the rm command could erase something you didnt want to erase, for example rm -rd / would delete your entire file system if you have the proper permissions. a good thing to do is add in the "i" modifier that will cause rm to verify every file/folder before deleting it, for large directories this can be a pain but definitely makes things safer.

Thanks. But, currently, the folder's name "Backup4Windows" is not there at all...

I don't even remember the exact name of "Backup4Windows", I just guessed it should be the name of "Backup4Windows", but actually, it's not.... What can I do then??

I got it. Everything is hidden in the hidden folder ".../.local/share/Trash/files" under my user folder.

So, just delete everything inside that folder, then, try "df", things are ok now!!

I've noticed that too (weird behaviour deleting files using the GUI). Thanks for the useful tips and commands, cuss I've experienced similar problems (I back-up regularly, but have lost few useless information).

I've noticed that once you chose to delete a folder using the GUI, you should NOT interrupt that window (even if it freezes, after some time it will respond). Also I now generally copy instead of move and later -if needed- I delete.

lol, I've a folder /temp for the Windows partition (meaning that it's just for the time the 'switch' to Unix and FOSS is over ). This may be off-topic, but how often do you boot Windows? Are you still using a dual boot?

I notice it too... sometimes I just cancel deleting in the GUI and go to the CLI. But I think it's more due to poor GUI implementations than "the CLI being superior than the CLI".

This week I deleted the /WINE (where Windows resides) partition once and for all. My scanner is working under Ubuntu and I can listen to my songs (altough I still prefer iTunes).

...although I'm going to use propietary software in the future (Mac and Mac apps, Wii and Wii games).

From my experience and from what i have understood(maybe im wrong) deleteing files from gui takes very long time cause when u delete something suse is not actually deleting it but copies/moves it to another directory(trash).Files are coppied there. But if u press shift+delete on a file suse does not copy it but deletes it and so it takes very little time. When deleting from console what u r doing is shift+delete and not delete(which means move to trash). So try shift+delete
