Ndiswrapper and SuSE 9.3

Hi guys,
this is, as promised, my second post about my troubles with SuSE Linux 9.3. Making my D-Link DWL-510 Wireless LAN Card work. Briefly: I've installed ndiswrapper from YaST2, then as root I typed:

ndiswrapper -i /pathtodrivers/NET8180.INF

(which is the "hacked" version of the Realtek 8180L drivres, with references to PCI-ID modified in order to match my card - I've modified the 8180:10ec with something:3300, don't exactly remember, anyway this works fine under WinXP and DID work fine under other distros of linux like mandrake, fedora, etc)

then

ndiswrapper -l

which tells me that driver and hardware are both present

then

modprobe ndiswrapper

which goes fine (no output).

Now: if I type iwconfig I see wlan0 as ethernet interface, but even if I try to set essid, channel, mode, etc, it just ignores my typing. If I try to set the DWL-510 from YaST and, in the advanced menu, i type "ndiswrapper" inside of the Module field, I can activate wlan0 from the connection manager, but it just won't connect to the AP (even if it sees it, although with no signal).

Did anyone ever managed to make this card work under SuSE 9.3 and ndiswrapper (version 1.0 "SuSE modified" I suppose).

Thanks
Juan de Marco

Update

Hi everybody,
I did some homework today, but still I can't get the wlan to work. Anyway, here's what I did: I wiped out SuSE from my PC and I've reinstalled it (boot loader works fine now!), then I've went thru some sort of walkthrough I've found on the net, but got no success. Anyway, i trashed any references inside /lib/modules/modules.dep .alias .pcimap of some axc_pci (not sure what was the purpose of this, but I did it), then I installed ndiswrapper from source (make; make install) and installed the driver. When I tried to modprobe the module I still got an error: operation not permitted. At this point I went back to /lib/modules/modules.dep and wiped away the line of ndiswrapper depending from some usb module. I was able to load the module. Then I tried to configure the DWL-510 from YaST (which sees the card, but says it has no driver for it), putting ndiswrapper as module.
Now, the card is supposed to work, but it does not. It scans my AP and locates all the wireless networks, but gives me 0 signal and does not connect at all. I've noticed something weird in the dmesg output when I try to activate the card thru kinternet (I guess it's kinternet, it's the icon with the cross on the top bar of gnome, which lists all the network cards and wireless networks):

wlan0: no IPv6 routers present
ndiswrapper (get_packet_filter:574): couldn't get packet filter: C00000BB
ndiswrapper (get_packet_filter:574): couldn't get packet filter: C00000BB
ndiswrapper (get_packet_filter:574): couldn't get packet filter: C00000BB
ndiswrapper (get_packet_filter:574): couldn't get packet filter: C00000BB
ndiswrapper (wrapper_worker_proc:1369): wlan0 is being reset

Do someone understands what does this mean?

Thanks in advance
Juan de Marco

Another Update

I've tried installing a fresh kernel from kernel.org. Now, ignoring the fact that the mouse wasn't recognised, ndiswrapper didn't work at all. I mean, it did the same thing it did before. Now the question is: why does it work under other distros but NOT under SuSE (which is the more good-lookin' and user friendly one in my opinion)?

Anybody, please, reply.

Ok, I tried to configure the card via YaST this time (after reinstalling the whole system, again) and still I get no result. I noticed that the card lists my ESSIDs (using iwlist wlan0 scan), but I get Quality : 0/100, and wlan0 won't connect to any of them.
If I look at dmesg output, I get every x seconds the message

ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper_hangcheck:<somenumber>): wlan0 is being reset

I don't remember the number, but it seems that my card keep resetting itself. Do anyone know what this might be? I've tried a moltitude of guides over the net, without any success. Any help is really apreciated.

I DID IT!

I used the open source driver (download here) and everything worked fine! I explain myself better. I made a fresh install, i extracted the driver in a folder then i went there as root and

> make

> make install

> ./module_load

at this point I configured the card via YAST, telling it to use the module r8180, and voila! I still don't know if it will work on boot, I don't care too much.

I really hope this can help someone, bye
