[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hey all,

I am a total linux newbie and was wondering if you could help me out - I have a d-link dwl-510 pci wireless card I am looking for drivers for this and info on how to set it up when I have the drivers, I have looked for a good 1/2 hour for these drivers and still no luck, any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks. Jack

This is what I found searching the net: http://www.canit.se/~oli/wl/ Hopefully this will work for you, and that you are able to setup your wireless card..

I have been trying to figure out if I should go wireless, just from what I have seen not sure if the length is far enough yet to reach everywhere I want it..

I have searched a bit more and find something else that might help you with your problem... http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...g_en%26hl%3Den and
http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/

Try these two sites and see if they work... If not I will continue to search for something else...

Hi after some trouble installing the thing, my first linux installation ever (took me ages, they should really make it easier) I couldnt find the program file so used my windows comp to check out thier website which lead to me finding out that it would cost me to use the program anyways, so any other ideas? I will continue searching but most things are over my head, also the first try I tried again and it said I had the wrong kernel I needed 2.4.20-8 which I downloaded the patch for then didnt know how to install that - so I'm now looking for the next method Any ideas

Thanks. Jack

Yes they should make the installment of Linux easier, and they are working on that... Maybe one day all you will need to do is hit one button and Linux installs...

I saw that on the site, just thought it had a trial version maybe not... Also I don't think you need to login, I downloaded a file for free without logging in..

You downloaded 2.4.20-8 nice, always good to have newer kernels.... How to install the kernel, look here: http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/202/1/

Hi, its not the installment of linux which was hard it was the installment of programs on linux, took me ages to figure out to use the make command ect.. Anyway I'm downloading mandrake 10 which comes with 2.6.4 or something right? I am also going to try the ndiswrapper method, so wish me luck

Thanks for all your help so far.

Jack

Mandrakelinux 10.0 is based on Linux kernel 2.6.3, which is really updated and might work for you.. I think by trying the ndiswrapper method you might be able to get the card to work...

There is always a way to get everything done in Linux...

Hopefully, this will be my last post, because I dont see what other problems I can run into :S, right I have installed the realtec driver for my card and in hardrake it is showing it as the correct card, however it is showing that module is unknown. When I try to set settings using iwconfig it throws me to say there are no devices installed. Any ideas?

Thanks. Jack

P.S To get iwconfig to work I had to install WirelessTools.

Great that you got the realtec driver working, and for hardrake seeing the card.. Now for the module not working, I found this post about that http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hos...read.html#5320 I know this is not about the card you have but it should work... Also that website has a lot on dwl-520 which might work for you card..

If nothing works then post again and I will look even harder next time...

Different distros have different ways of setting up programs, and I know that the D-Link DWL-510 will work in Mandrake... Moving to slackware will not help you solve your problem...

If you are looking for Mandrake 10 iso: ftp://ftp.phys.ttu.edu/pub/mandrakel...iso/10.0/i586/ and for Slackware 10 iso: http://ftp.belnet.be/linux/slackware...ware-10.0-iso/
