Cannot get YOU to work (SUSU 9.3, 10)

Can anybody PLEASE show exactly what you have to type in to the YOU online update to get it to work

If I just run the standard YOU online update from the menu I always get

Cannot fetch remote server list. Only defined Use Patch sources will be available

Possible solution

Check network connection

URL: http;//www.suse.de/cgi-bin/suseservers.cgi,br>couldn't connect to host

(I've put a semi colon instead of a : to stop the forum software trying to mark this as a link)

So I know get a screen

Installation Source User Defined Location

Location

What should I enter into the location so YOU actually works.

Thank

Cheers

-K

try from a root console "yast2 online_update".

If same error, from user console try "wget http://www.suse.de/cgi-bin/suseservers.cgi" That should drop Suse update servers list into your current directory that you type wget from.

wget should work fine. If it does I'm thinking the yast2 online update file is probably a bit screwed with since i dont recall the ,br being after the URL.

correct and retry?

The only reason you should be getting error like that is you don't have an internet connection. Make sure the connection is working properly. If it is, try different servers.

I was having the same problem. YOU not finding the server, and wget coming back 'connection timed out'
I typed the address listed in crazibri's reply directly into my web browser, and it came back with a list of addresses. Can't post them since I'm new to the forum, but give it a try

Took me a while to figure this out, so I'm gonna post it. The idea I list above comes back with a list of servers that start with 'http' - but you have to put them in as ftp servers, not http.

There are two sticky threads on the SuSE forum (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...splay.php?f=60) about YaST repositories and sources.

Yay, so glad---at least I am not alone. lol. I have been fighting with this problem all day. I posted here about it this evening, after not managing to find your thread. I haven't solved it I am saddened to say.
Will keep trying and if I figure anything more out, will post back here.
I also have a mandriva machine, which updates just fine, so I know of course that the router is not an issue. It's something in the way that suse sets up it's connection (I'm gathering). Can any of you just state where you got your installation disk/s- I'm wondering whether there isn't a bug in the software-desperation speaking.

Have you set up SuSE's networking parameters?

Yast
Network Services
DNS and Hostname
Proxy

Browsers work quite happily, but Yast needs the same information.

Ok, I've got my YOU working- and I have to say that I could swear that I've tried it before and failed. Anyway , for the sake of any newbies that might benefit from this, I'll post the solution that worked for me.

Firstly, and I can't emphasise this enough, is YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN AS ROOT. This might ellicit a chuckle or two from you seasoned linux folk, but it wasn't obvious to me and was a real hurdle (DOH!)

Go to http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16592.html This explanation will hold your hand through the whole process, and it worked for me.

Hope this helps someone.
