I'm running openSUSE 10.2 with beryl, XGL, KDE and Geforce4 Ti4200. It runs quite well if you exclude any 3d intensive app (games and celestia miss some opengl extensions, have problems) and videos (small screen and full screen works fine; if the video is a large window, it is very slow). I have been using it for about two months and it hasn't crashed, yet you should expect some rough edges.

You didnt go through any problems installing it? u have a very similar setup just a different graphic card. Did you just install all the packages from the repos and got it working like its should happen????
I've just recently setup Beryl on openSuse 10.2 with no problems to speak of thus far. I installed the packages from YaST and followed this guide http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl.
I forgot to mention that I was unable to get 3d acceleration by installing the nvidia drivers via the nvidia repository (ftp.nvidia.com). If I used the .bin file (version 9831 IIRC), it would install and work perfectly.

They gave me errors when I tried to add them in yast so I had to manually add them as explained in post #8
is anyone running beryl on 10.2 because ive tried everything possible and nothing is working. i post errors nd no one helps me im really annoyed im back to compiz but annoyed cuz i wanna modify some things nd i cant on kde nd i cant put cgwd themes n e more which sucks. They should have never forked off. Did u install beryl with NVIDIA? Because i do exactly what it says nd i always get errors.
I'm running beryl on 10.2 with an NVIDIA 6600GT with no problems whatsoever. What sort of problems are you experiencing?
I use openSUSE 10.2 and beryl with Nvidia's AIGLX extensively on my Pentium III 600 Mhz with a Geforce 4 Ti 4200. It works spectacularly. Video playback is smooth (except with DVD and higher resolution movies, they get a tiny bit choppy). I can also run games at full speed and with all OpenGL extensions and functions activated (not disabled like when running XGL).
The trick to getting good performance with Beryl is to make sure it runs using the Texture from Pixmap GLX extension. Its not worth running Beryl if you're using the slow, CPU hogging copy method.
I also find that Nvidia's AIGLX is faster than Xorg's inbuilt AIGLX which in turn is faster than XGL. I think the difference in performance between Nvidia's and Xorg's implementation are virtually eliminated with a decent computer (not my craptacular rig). The difference between AIGLX and XGL are HUGE. If you're a regular desktop user who just wants the special effects, definitely go with AIGLX. The reason I say this is because XGL is a x server nested within another x server, resulting in a big overhead and causing 3D apps to be run indirectly using the crappy Mesa OpenGL implementation. Also, to enable effects using XGL, you have to log off and log back in. XGL, in my opinion, is not ready for desktop use. It is a prototype designed specifically to demonstrate the possibility of completely replacing X calls to the hardware with an OpenGL stack. You'll definitely get much better results with Beryl using AIGLX.
I've also installed it successfully on a Dell Inspiron 5100 with a P4 2.4 Ghz processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 16 MB of onboard RAM using the open-source radeon drivers and the Mesa OpenGL implementation (wooh long winded sentence ). I had trouble getting Texture from Pixmap to work on it at first. It kept giving me a white cube with no images whatsoever on it. After installing Xorg 7.2, the problem was fixed. However, the performance is less than spectacular. Scrolling in websites is slow, and there are glitches when blur is used to get that Vista like affect on your window decorations. Video playback, while smooth, does not synchronize with window movements. Moving a window will not move the actual video until the mouse is released. The video also can not be transformed (it is not deformed when using Wobbly windows and when using the cube the video simply disappears). However, they are minor problems that I can deal with. Besides what can you expect with such a crappy video card.
Xbennyboy, what version of the nvidia driver did you use? I tried nVidia/AIGLX with 9831 and it would crash after 10 minutes of heavy OpenGL use (celestia). I have been running XGL for 2 months with no crashes or performance problems (related to XGL; beryl has some memory leaks and performance problems itself).
9831? Are you using the beta drivers? The latest stable drivers listed on nvidia's site is 9746. I myself am using the 9631 drivers because nvidia dropped official support for its geforce 4 line in the 9746 drivers. If beryl is causing problems you can update your xorg to 7.2, download latest compiz and use beryl-manager to start compiz up for you.
I made a mistake; I meant 9631 in the previous posts. I tried it again and opengl applications and video run at full speed. However, the performance of compositing windows seems a little slower, probably due to the AIGLX architecture. Anyway, I will test how stable it is and decide whether XGL is worth it afterall.
Ausxvr, try using "Force Nvidia" in the Beryl options. Nvidia in my experience is faster than Xorg's AIGLX. Also, it might also be slow because Beryl (that's if you're running Beryl, not compiz) is syncing to v blank. Disable it in the General settings in the Beryl settings manager. I've experienced significant improvements particularly in wobblying window speed just by disabling this.
