A few problems with SUSE 10...please help.

I'm a Linux noob no question about it but I have messed with a few distros from DSL to Unbutu. last year I even toyed with SUSE 9.3.

Anyways I finally got around to messing with SUSE 10 and I kinda like it though its s-l-o-w, but that could be cuz I'm running it on a P 3 with 440 MB ram and using GNOME instead of KDE.
Anyways I have no idea what to do about these problems I'm having:

1) I downloaded the libdvdcss RPM but when I attempt to click it or open with YAST it does NOTHING at all . This is issue has made me tired and weary and the file it not found on YAST what is causing this to happen? Has it been disabled by SUSe somehow?

2) I cannot get IRC to work Firefox and SUSE its giving me a "irc is not a registered protocol" when I click a link on IRCSPY or a simular site .I'm using XCHAT which I find to be not as nice as MIRC. Is there a better client if/when I get this feature to work?I have even did the about:config and set the signed applets to TRUE.

3) When I attempt to play a music CD it sounds like Alvin and The Chipmunks, yet mp3 files are ok...

4) And lastly I have no idea how to configure SAMBA so I can share files between XP and SUSE. Which is somethign I really need to be able to do and is more important than me playing DVd's or the Cd problem.

I have read a ton of text until I was blue in the face...u guys are my final hope if this doesn't work I'll have no choice but to go back to XP.

One thing I noticed with Suse 10 which was untrue of previous versions was that if I wanted to install a rpm I downloaded I would first have to add that folder as a directory source for yast (right click the folder -> actions -> Add Directory as Yast Source.) I just created a folder in my home directory called rpms and added as source and just save any rpms I download there.

I dont use IRC so I can't tell you what to do about that not too sure about the cd player either.

As far as samba goes.

To access files on a windows machine from suse.

1. Share the folder in XP.
2. Go into Konqeror and at the location bar type smb://$servername/$sharename

If that doesn't work you may want to substitute $servername with $ipaddress

To access files from a linux machine in windows

1. Go into YAST start the samba server fill in the workgroup information and all that.
2. Open the port in the firewall.
3. Install SWAT. Swat is a web based tool for configuring a samba server. It lets you set up shares, permissions, monitor connections and is very easy to use. I think SWAT still comes with suse so you should be able to install it through yast.

Hopefully that gives you somewhere to start.

I appreciate the speedy reply but alas I encountered errors for all of your
fixes though perhaps I didn't do the first one correctly. But I don't see anything that remotely says "actions" on any of the folders. I did try to import the RPM via YAST but it didn't work either. I don't know what to do now.

I also did every thing u told me to but when I typed in the "address " I got the following:
"An error occurred while loading smb://$servername/$sharename:
Internal Error
Please send a full bug report at http://bugs.kde.org
Unknown error condition in stat: Connection timed out"

When I searched YAST for SWAT I didn't find any matches. One good thing is that when I access "Network Servers"I can see the "Windows Network" but when I click it nothing happens.

On the Xp machine I see nothing as well, this goes for workgroup and network places...I'm stummped here.

Sorry those didnt work for you. I had a hell of a time getting samba to work. Little tweaks here and there that i didnt document like a should have. You can always download and install swat, like i said i didnt know if it came with 10.0 or not I know it came with 9.2

Based on the error message you have below I may not have made my directions very clear. You dont want to type "$servername" or "$sharename" I meant for those to represent the machine name of the xp machine and the name the folder is shared as so if you have a folder shared as Documents on an XP machine name ComputerA then in the address bar in konqeror you would type smb://ComputerA/Documents. Sorry If I didnt make that very clear.

For the rpms though If you right click on any folder in konqeror (i dont know if nautlis or any other file managers work.) There will be a menu that will show up with options like open in a new window, open with, preview in, and copy, cut, etc .. In that menu there should be an option that says actions.

<snip>

Your problem is that you've lost the file association for RPM. Reset the association to "konqueror" and it should work correctly again.

Point your mouse at the following url: http://itsyourpc.org/Tutorials/SMB/SMB.html
and you will find a beautifull flash animation showing all the steps to configure your network using Samba.

If you are behind a router with a built in firewall, you can turn off the firewall in SuSE so that you can see the other shares on your network. I have not figured out the problems with my firewall yet, but working on it. To view the share on your Linux Box from other computers, you will need to set them up with the SAMBA server. I am not sure how to write to the Samba share, but again I am working on it.

I am still working out bugs of my own, but I feel your pain.

KingKong's link was great. I found the problem I was having to write to the shares. One word permissions. You need to grant access to the folders in KDE by going to the properties context menu and then clicking on the permissions tab. Silly mistake on my part not checking this. LOL

However I am still unable to access the network if I turn on the SuSE firewall.
