Wink 9.1 SMP Newbie X hangs I'm Lost

Ok, I am working on a Dell Precision 220, dual P3 933MHZ did a clean SuSE 9.1 ftp install. Using kernel-2.6.5-7.111-smp
The default Xserver hangs on start up on the smp.
The Xserver hangs during sax2 config on smp.

I'm lost how to figure this out. I have searched these forums, Googled the topic been to the SuSE support DB. I have used SuSE for a couple of years but never had to do any heavy manual configuring. If someone has some instruction how to figure this out, I would really like to learn how to do it. I am not afraid of the command line I just have very little experience with it.

Where to begin? A checklist of info? Let me know

Thanks,

Paul

You could try to start sax from the command line with specification of the driver to use:

sax2 -m 0=vesa #example using the vesa driver

Have a look in http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/01/wessels_sax2.html for some hints.

Thanks for the reply I will give it a run...

The thing is the xserver worked under a single cpu on the default kernel and through updated kernel from SuSE Online Update.

When I run "top" under kernel-smp and do a hardware check all my irq's are different from their settings in the bios.
Could this have an impact on the xserver?

I am not quite sure but there was a package for smp-irq balancing that installed as well with the kernel-smp, there must be some setting I am missing obviously. I am going to go back and read the smp-How-To again but as kernel features have changed I am finding most info is for older kernels.

One other thought there is a section for the kernel in the system-config editor with various settings for module loading as well as a ACPI_DSDT"Differentiated System Description Table" that should contain the variations of the system from the bios settings. I am wondering if the DSDT is somthing I need?

Also in the n the system-config editor are some settings for the framebuffer; Would I need to make some adjustments there as well?

Any further thoughts would be great!

Thanks,

Paul
