Hi, I'm Nick (opnickc) and I just started using linux on my desktop a few weeks ago when I read an article about Ubuntu on PC World's website. I was very impressed with the OS, and although still a little rough around the edges I was amazed at what you can get for free when Windows costs so much. I tried putting linux on my laptop too, but had some hardware compatabilty trouble, so I'm still using windows on it. Anyway, I recently decided to give SuSE a try, and here's where the difficulty started.
First, I downloaded the 5 cds, burned them, and tried to install them. When I got to the part of the installation where it checks the integrity of my discs, they all failed. I decided to try to install anyway, thinking it might've just been a fuke. It wasn't; I got errors about missing packages.
I didn't have 5 more cds to burn, so I downloaded and burned the DVD (I initially had thought the DVD download was a live disc since it said "EVAL" in the file name). I ended up with the same problem.
The burning software I'm using is CD Burner XP pro version 3. I burned all of the disks at 4x to ensure no problems with burning.
Hello, nick!
First of all it was smart to burn images at low speed but still it's recommended to use alcohol 120% or Nero to Burn ISOs. Try again with these softs and post back if solved
Ok, I think you're right about the md5 thing. I couldn't get the windows md5 checking program to work, but when I install the disk and it checks it, it's checking the md5 thing. I still don't really understand what this md5 stuff is, but it looks like that's the problem.
I'm downloading the DVD iso again. Any suggestions on how to make sure it downloads correctly?
You have to make sure to pick the right part of the three-part executable file of MD5Summer. There's only one that actually works, even though you probably see three icons that look exactly the same in Explorer. I'll let you know which one later this evening (I can't remember off the top of my head)-- but if you pick the incorrect icon, it will stall out or crash. I've had a few problems with MD5Summer

I just downloaded the DOS one and it worked. duffmckagan was right, the md5 codes didn't match up. I'm re-downloading the dvd iso right now (should finish by the morning). Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.
Originally posted by duffmckagan Well, if you are on Windows, you can use the Windows Version of Md5 Summer.
Why go for DOS version, when you can get it easy with the Windows Version?
The windows one didn't seem to recognize the file, the DOS one did. I don't mind getting my hands dirty in a little command-driven UI every so often. And since I've used DOS before, I'm pretty comfortable with it. No big deal.
Still downloading the iso. This time I'm using an ftp program rather than just a web browser. Hopefully it'll keep the file intact.
Well, it is always recommend to download the File with some Download Accelerator, or stuff like that.
When you download the file with the Web Browser, it is ought to miss some bits or bytes, which can be harmful.
Moreover, the download managers (rather accelerators) tend to download every bit and byte of the file, making it a successful download.
So there is always a difference, between both of them.
But, if the file gets downloaded properly with the Web Browser itself, it is a matter of sheer luck.
Download the ISO's and check the md5sum. If they don't match, the image was corrupted during the download and is useless. Delete it and try again. Once you do have a successful md5sum match, then you need to burn the ISO to the disk, but it must be burnt as an image file, not as an ordinary data file. (There's no point in trying to burn the ISO to the disk before confirming md5sum's, all that you're likely to end up with is another coaster.) In any event, you don't mention whether you're burning the ISO as an image, so that may be a factor. Also, use quality, name brand blanks disks. The no-name budget blanks are usually garbage, and you're only wasting your money. Good luck with it -- J.W.

Moreover, burning the Images at a slower speed also, may help.
