trouble logging in when new install of mepis or suse 9.2

hey gang,

what am i doing wrong with suse 9.2 or mepis 3.3? i installed or booted to the mepis cd, it showed the installation of files and then went to a login prompt. I entered user = root and password = root and then the screen said have fun? but goes back to another command prompt that looks like this......root-tty?! or something and it wants a command entered in. where do I go from here? Suse 9.2 is doing the same exact thing......how do I get into the linux gui?

my install of suse 9.2 and 9.3 (live cd) also came up with about 5 errors during install (ie. openoffice can't install, etc.). wha'ts up with that?

my pc is a dell laptop 6000d, new, 1.6p4m, 512ddr2, 128 ati pc express card.

any help is greatly appreicated!!!!

If I buy the full cd from Bestuy for Suse 9.3 will it work on my Dell? Is there any guarantee of that?

- Mike

I'm not familiar with those particular distros but it seems that everything went well. If it spit out 'have fun' then dumped you to the root prompt it was successful. Try rebooting again and if you get the same results type startx at the prompt and see what happens.

There is no such thing as a linux gui. You have multiple choices for running a point and click interface in the Unix world. I suggest going to freshmeat.net and searching on 'window managers' to get an idea of what's available. I use Window Maker.

Don't give up and have fun,
