hi, i have Toshiba notebook , Model : M35X-S309 Satellite. the notebook is equipped with 5-in-1 Media reader. In windows, ( dual OS on the Notebook ) , Media reader works absolutely fine.
But in 9.3 Pro SuSE, First of all , i checked "SuSEPlugger" , in the list of hardwares attached to my notebook, there is no sign of Media Reader device. Second, when i insert any card like : SD,Memory Stick Duo, XD Card etc. (all cards run smooth in Win XP ), in Media Reader while SuSE box is up, SuSE shows NOTHING. I mean System shows no any informative pop up window , which is shown usually when a new hardware is plugged in. SuSe does not respond at all. Not even the indicator of the media starts blinking.
What can be the reason, possibly why SuSE did not install Media Reader , if it installed then why it does not respond when i inserted the card.
Strange! It sounds like a hotplug related problem. Are the usb port recognised at boot (scanning usb...)? What happens when you attempt to load the usbstorage driver (modprobe usb-storage) and then plugin the drive? There is a small utility, called usbview (it might need to be installed first). This should list the ports, even if nothing is attached. Does it do that?
Dear "abisko00" , Media reader is not attached on USB. It is built-in on my notebook. I don't know what port it is connected to. What one thing i am very much sure that it is not on USB. Second i checked " usbview " utility. It shows no such device. It shows only my Mouse. which i connect to USb. Rest 2 USB are idle. Nothing attached to them.
What you say...?
Thanks for your reply. Keep replying with new ideas.
Sorry, I didn't realise that this is built-in. I have no experience with internal devices. Don't you find any traces of its recognition in the logfiles? What happens if you blindly mount the first free sdx device (e.g. 'mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mountpoint')?
Built in memory card readers normally use an internal USB port. With SuSE 9.2 and 9.3 it takes a while for the card to be recognized, particularly the first time. Once mounted a konqueror window will pop up for the memory card. For me, memory sticks and card readers work flawlessly on SuSE. Make sure you the reader time to be recognized. Unplugging early aborts the process.
