opensuse 10.1 alpha
I just wanted a forum to express how happy I am with the latest release of the Suse linux operating system. I've recently installed 10.1 alpha on an HP Pavilion zv5200z laptop with an AMD64 CPU. It runs like a dream. Out of the box all of my internal hardware worked immediately.
As far as x-tra functionality, I needed to do a bit of tweaking to get some other things working. I use a Linksys WPC54G wireless card and needed to use ndiswrapper to get it to work. But the main thing is IT WORKS. When I used Suse 9.3 pro on the same laptop I could never get the card to work.
For MP3 and DVD functionality I downloaded all of the mad rpms and libdvdcss along with an unofficial version of xine-lib and all of my multimedia works great.
A cool little feature that i noticed (it may not be new to this version, but new to me) is that when you select some files and drag them over a folder as if to move them, the folder temporarily opens up to show you what is inside. Once you select "move here" you are returned to the folder that you were initially viewing. I really dig this and I've never noticed it in a past version of Suse.
I really like how stable this release is. I think that I may have found a permanent replacement for windows on my laptop...... YAY!!!!!!
So... props to Novell, Suse and all of the people who have contributed to the release of Suse 10.1 alpha. I think this is the most complete operating system I've ever used.
And by the way, I installed a "beta" version of Windows Vista (5219) on my desktop. Although the "clear" glass good for about an hour of "ooo's and aaah's", microsofts ideas of system improvements lack a lot to be desired and windows still needs antivirus software running in memory all the time.... anyways, just wanted to set a refernce point in my own head about who's making the most progress towards better computing... answer OPEN SUSE!!
