Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Sparc or Alpha

Hello,

I know very little about hardward, but I am trying to learn. My question is regarding Sparc and Alpha. This came up when I was trying to download a realplayer so I could listen to CBC radio online. I had to choose between Redhat/Sparc or Redhat/Alpha and I have no idea what either of them means. I think it has to do with processers but that is just a guess. I don't think I use either. How do I find out? I tried using uname -a and this is what it gives me:

Linux devinsbox 2.4.18-14 #1 Wed Sep 4 13:35:50 EDT 2002 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Does this tell me?

Thanks

At the end it says i*86, this is an Intel type CPU not a Sparc or alpha. You need to download that Intel package. I think that realplayer is on the redhat cd if you bought the pro version.

Sparc and Alpha are used for servers (sparc is also used for workstations). Aother than that I have no idea.
