looking for a couple basic answers

newbie here. i've been working to correct a problem that had prevented me from ever seeing my GUI in linux (which really sucks). Through a lot of help on this forum, i've come to the conclusion that i need to:
1. reinstall the ati driver for my radeon x600 pci-e card (or use the generic config)
2. edit my xorg.conf file to reflect my monitors actual refresh rates.

anyone out there want to give me a extremely simplified, step-by-step guide to do these 2 things?

i really want to get this going so i can get in to the GUI and teach myself a little linux. i would love to make the switch out of winxp someday.
