emacs loads very, very slowly - why?

I just upgraded my system (believe it or not, from a 600 MHz slot 1 athlon) to an athlon 64 (3000+, GB K8nS mobo, Maxtor DM 40GB HD, 512 MB DDR400 mem) and suse 9.1 (8.2 before) and noticed that some applications, most noticeably emacs, load much more slowly than before (emacs takes 10-15 sec to load). Mozilla also seems to take longer. Some apps are speeded up immensly (load time, that is) - gcc is a good example, it's instantaneous.

I have looked at the HD settings and DMA is enabled (133) and it is running fine. The only other things I can think of is that I am running ReiserFS now, was running ext2 before.

Has anyone else encountered this slowdown, or have any ideas what is causing it?

- Ian
