Configuring 3D Acceleration on ATI Mobility 9000 Video

If there is a linux guru out there that can please explain to me what I am doing wrong I will greatly appreciate it!!!

I wasn't able to configure the drivers and get "startx" to work on my machine until now.

After many days of frustration I was finally able to install the drivers and get the graphical interface to work.

But now the problem is when I start a game that has 3D acceleration I can't see a single thing!! My screen is black. I can hear the music but all I have is a black screen!! Ive tried it with Tux racer and I can't see a single thing.

My machine is a laptop HP Pavilion ZV5330US.

Dear ng,

Please be so kind as to give a little more information, distro, kernel, gcc version, and so forth.

Also, it is important to know how much ram you have, as there is a known bug with 1 gig of ram or more.

Are you using the current 8.14.13 drivers. Are you installing via rpm, dpkg, or running the ati installer?

Is agpart enabled or disabled in your kernel, and then what is your answer to the use internal agpart question in fglrxconfig?

It make take a day, but those drivers do work very well.

Best,
M

Yeah that might help a little! LOL This is as much information that I know of but please be aware that I am yet still a newbie.

First of all I downloaded the Mobility™ FireGL™ T2/9000 drivers on the ATI site.

---I am using SuSE 9.1 that came on a DVD with a book that I bought.

---XFree86 Version 4.3.99.902

----glibc-2.1

=================================
These are the minimum system requirements that I saw in the ATI website.

------POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D apps
----glibc version 2.2 or 2.3
----Linux kernel 2.4 or higher
----XFree86 version 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, or X.org 6.8
====================================

I used the ATI installer and then ran fglrxconfig to configure the thing....

QUESTION: how can I check the version of the kernel I have and if I have POSIX Shared Memory support??

How can I update glibc???

I have the drivers installed after many tries and I can actually get the GUI started, the problem is when I play games that need 3D acceleration I cant see anything!! All I see is a black screen! I also get audio but that's about it.

I've been trying to get the 3D accelerator working on my machine for the longest now and I'm constrained by the time that I have and the internet connection here sucks!! I have to go to an internet cafe to access ftp which is incredibly slow which is quite a hassle for me 'cos all the stuff im wearing is kinda heavy. LOL

Thanks all for all your help and look forward to your replies.
